"Think and act in a way so that Auschwitz will never repeat itself."
Theodor Adorno, 1966.
The Mémoire d'Auschwitz Study and Documentation Centre, which is a recognised centre for lifetime study, was created in 1980 by the Belgian Association of Ex-Political Prisoners of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Camps and Prisons of Silesia. To carry out its role as a centre for information and education effectively, it was established as a Study and Documentation Centre in order to promote analysis, research and publications relating to the complex socio-historical circumstances which led to a world of Nazi concentration camps and the Jewish and Gypsy genocides. To this end it possesses a well-stocked library on the premises of the Brussels City Archives, as well as a large body of documentation which is available to allalike , students, researchers and the general public.
The Mémoire d'Auschwitz also aims to integrate remembrance of Nazi crimes and genocides into the modern historical consciousness, in order to prevent a resurgence of ideologies or regimes which trample human dignity and freedom under foot.
It also aims to inform the public, particularly the younger generations, about the history of the Third Reich, the world of Nazi concentration camps, the Second World War and the genocide of the Jewish and Gypsy communities perpetrated by the Nazis.
